Wool fibers have a scaly surface, while cashmere fibers, although smoother, are more delicate. The difference in friction coefficients between the different fibers after blending causes the fiber ends to entangle and form pills. Slight pilling is usually observed in areas with high friction, such as cuffs, elbows, and sides, during the initial wear period. This is normal and not a quality issue.
Key factors affecting pilling: Higher yarn twist reduces pilling. Worsted yarns are more resistant to pilling than woolen yarns. Wool blends with over 70% wool content have a lower probability of pilling, while blends with high cashmere content (over 50%) are more prone to pilling due to the softer cashmere fibers. Plain weave fabrics are more resistant to pilling than twill or cable knit fabrics.
Daily maintenance methods: Before wearing a new coat for the first time, refrigerate it for 24 hours (in a sealed bag to prevent moisture). Low temperatures can temporarily harden the fiber scales and reduce pilling. Avoid friction with rough fabrics when wearing. Do not wear continuously for more than 3 days at a time. It is recommended to use a lint remover to remove existing pills; never pull or tear them by hand.
When washing, use cold water and a wool-specific detergent. Gently hand wash and lay flat to dry. For machine washing, always select the wool cycle and use a laundry bag. Keep the spin speed below 400 rpm. For storage, hang on a wide-shouldered hanger to prevent deformation, and fold with cotton paper between layers to prevent friction.
